Architectural Experience

My Architectural Experience

“Chicago” is the third most populated city in the United States of America after New York City and Los Angeles. Chicago is also known for its skyscraper and for architecture of city. The Willis Tower also known by Sears Tower before 2009 is one of the attractions of Chicago. The Willis Tower was one of the tallest skyscrapers in Chicago and second in the United State. I am going to share my experience of going on to the skydeck of its 104th store.

It was a year ago, My friend and I went to the Willis Tower to experience its skydeck. We are so excited to feel and explore the height and the glass skydeck on 104th level. We went inside and first they played the video about its history and how they planned to build. Design of the building came out of 9 cigarettes on hand putting it in different height, which we can see on the building construction now. After that we were guided toward the elevator and proceed to 104th floor.  It’s surprisingly wonderful view of the Chicago city and suburbs from there. We can see the view to the infinitive point or I can say as far as our eyes can figure it out. Toward the west side of the building there are four glass boxes coming out from the wall about a 4 feet each. From there we can look all four sides and which is very sensational to our body and mind. It’s very hard to see directly under our feet to see the level of our body from to floor. It is some 412 meter (1353 feet) above the ground and I felt like it’s going to crash, sink or fall all the way to the floor.

Construction of Willis Tower was started at 1970 and finshed at 1973. It was a world’s tallest building from 1973 to 1998.

Thank You,

The Happy Show
-By Stefan Sagmeister

This show (The Happy Show) is all about how one can be happy in their life, and the kind of happiness we can expect in our life time. There is a big question, “what the level that we can measure our happiness is?” There are many things and aspects in life. In every step of our life we experience new and unique things, so there are different kinds of happiness. It also depends on person who is looking through what prospective toward their life. For instance, one’s family, work, companion, friends, TV program, neighbor, free time, exercise, money and art…….. Happiness also depends on how one feel about sharing things with others, or just receiving from others. Happiness also depends on one’s thinking about surrounding objects. In brief, if one is happy then their life is happy, which means they sees everybody happy and it became Happy Show.

All these things I describe above are somehow reflected in the work by Stefan Sagmeister, an artist and a creature of the show called “The Happy Show”. This is taking place at Chicago Cultural Center from July 13 – September 23.  He is a part time artist or I would love to say thinker of our society. Professionally, he work as an art and design director of music album covers and is known for these stuff that he do. He created a huge scene in the gallery space with his strong thoughts or represented somebody’s thought about happiness, such as, psychologists Daniel Gilbert, Steven Pinker and Jonathan Haidt; anthropologist Donald Symons; and several historians.

There are many interesting and eye catching works in the gallery wall and floor, but one of them is all typography that he create is wonderful. People feel fresh to read these words because it makes you feel like you are doing conversation with Stefan face to face, which is very thoughtful and cleaver step he took. One of the attention grabber of his exhibition which I love is typography.

“My Overall Level Of Satisfaction” is one of my best piece that Stefan created. It shows that whatever one should do in life but always need to set the level of satisfaction, so they feel happy in life. You are riding a bicycle and making an effort to roll its wheel, but you already set your mind that you are reaching nowhere. There you set your level of satisfaction and feel happy even after you are bicycling for an hours.

My experience in Bikalpa Art Center (BAC)'s Artist in Residency

Installation Art (Conceptual Art)

How do living beings (you) feel if someone ended locking them (you) inside the cage. Why don’t we change this practice and let everybody live as they want in this world? Why don’t we trap our evil thought instead of innocent lives (Birds, Animals, or human)?

Pinjada (पिंजडा) (Cage), 2013
Mixed Media (Plastics, cotton cloths, newspaper, iron cage)
104" x 60" (size variable)

That’s what I am trying to state and aware my viewers through my art installation work called Pinjada (Cage).
I made one really big cage out of transparent plastic and hanged one real cage in the middle of that big cage, where I trapped origami bird in it.
The viewer’s show their sympathy to the bird and entered to the big cage, they will feel same kind of uneasiness or suffocation.
At the same room, I installed other two art works.
One is with two small cages hanging at the two corners, and I requested visitors to write their evil thought and trap inside these cages and free themselves. On the other side I just hung three different materials like a piece of cotton, iron net and bobble plastic wrap to show various kind of suffocation or trap out there in real world.

Three different Materials
"Two cages to trap one's evil thought"
"आफु  भित्रको  राक्षसलाई कैद गरौ "

 Zindagi (Life),
is the title of my second work.
If somebody asks me, “What is life?”

I don’t really know, but I took one small piece from huge puzzle and tried to focus on that point.
We will walk by our own path and tried to achieve big success in life. The problems appear then when we tend to forget our past, which somehow affects our life forever and stick to it.
I made an impression of footsteps all over the floor and hung these shoes around the trees. There wasn't one single shoes lying down on the floor, where I am indicating all the left footsteps and the gap between them. I felt that what we are doing these days, knowingly or unknowingly!

One interesting thing about this residency is the controversy that creates by my work Zindagi (Life). Some people have strong objection of hanging shoes on the tree, indeed it’s more about placing them on the top of their head which consider as a bad luck and the house owner warned the curator of the gallery.
