Artist - II (Movie)

Jean - Michel Basquiat.....................
..........................................................................................................................is an artist who became famous so easily and fast. I don’t know who made an artist famous and popular among public. Definitely there need to be higher level skill of making art, but time and the surrounding also play an important role. Basquiat is living in the street of New York and wandering to the street with his graffiti.

How
is
he
that
we are talking about?

Yes, He is a late 19th century’s young and famous artist in New York art circle. He was an example of change of social class from rag to riches. It is not a bad thing to have a life chances, unless it happen so sudden or unexpectedly. For instance, one doesn’t have a quarter in his or her pocket to spend and next day s/he has millions of dollars to spend, we can imagine how that feels. I think that individual person become mad, crazy and uncontrollable because of that drastic change in a life. Getting money in hand is wonderful, but it’s very challenging to use wisely. Otherwise, the person will be overwhelmed and don’t know what to do with all these money. That’s what happened to Jean – Michel Basquiat with his speedy transmission in social life and level. He move from card-box house to expensive condo, from rambling on the street to driving limo car, eating on the street to very renown and expensive hotel, and from his old friend to rich group of people. All these happened so suddenly that he doesn’t know how to handle it. He can’t decide what and who is important in his life, therefor he lost all his old friends and his own life where he can do whatever he liked to do.

People appreciate his work so much that every single show was sold in a few hours of opening day, and people and art dealer gave him so much presser to produce a huge amount of work in a short period of time. Meanwhile, if someone tried to told him what they want to make him so that match their interior, he would throw whatever is in front of him to the person. That’s what I liked about him a most is respect for art. Art can be decorative piece if some artist intended it to be, but it’s not that all art is for decorative piece. This kind of mentality is so disrespectful to art and artist. He said that he was so much inspired by Picasso’s work Geurnica, because that’s one painting he saw and observe from his childhood with his mother.

Picasso, Geurnica, 1937

Basquiate work is so strong with works and drawings that come unconsciously to his mind and his hands just move. I think he didn't know what he is doing with his hand, but at the same time he know exactly what he is working with his mind. His every brush stroke of line and color was so strongly impress into the canvas that nobody can imagine. He live in present and work in past, I mean he watch television and listen to the music continuously, and read almost everything and get an inspiration from everything. He had such a deep knowledge of every historical movement and show very strong imitation to race and ethnicity. He really didn't like when people show discrimination toward him. Every single work of his reflects his nature and personality.  Even though, he is physically not existed around us we can look at his work and feel him among us. All his works are so strong that we can feel his presence among us.

In his life time of 27 years in this earth he made some collaborative work with Andy Warhol, and people believe that they are very close and love to each other. He sold his few postcards to Andy Warhol at the coffee shop and makes a big impress on him. Afterward, they are together until people and media started to talk about Warhol taking advantage of him and he is a chained dog of Warhol. They never saw each other and Warhol died very suddenly and Basquiate started to consume an excessive drug. Lately, that is the cause of ending one wonderful life and strong artist forever.

Exploring Art Institute of Chicago with art lovers

Art Institute of Chicago

It is always nice to be with our art appreciation class group including our teacher Gitte, who is awesome. She took us to Art Institute of Chicago as a field trip, and we just have to enjoy art works.  She divide us into several groups of two students and told us to pick one art work we like and need to explain to whole class. I mean we need to do presentation about one artists work, which was exciting.

Our Art Appreciation Class Group, 2013

We went through my favorite section or I can say most art lover or appreciators best section of Impression and Post Impression arts. We went through Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday on La Grande”, which is a great example of Pointillism, and we can also look at this particular painting as an example of optical effect of color. Afterward, we moved toward Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin’s paintings and observe them closely. We have some knowledge of their technique of use of colors. Van Gogh’s color is very bold and straight color with big brush strokes and Gauguin use color very thoughtfully to express his feelings through.

Gerhard Richer, German.
Mother with two children
Furthermore, we went to new wings of modern art and got chance to see some of the contemporary artist’s works after 1960. There are many interesting and conceptual work done by different artists. I really appreciate the work of German artist Gerhard Richer.

My partner Amy and I did our presentation on the American artist Charles Ray, who was born in 1953. It’s a large size sculpture that was curved in Japanese technique of wood curving by Yuboku Mukoyoshi. This technique is known as Hinoki and the sculptor was finished and brought here in USA on 2007. The subject matter of the sculptor is really big and old tree log that was laying into the jungle of California. It was really beautiful and looks like some life just ended and resting on peace and we gave the title for this work, “Ending of Nature (life)”.

Another artist that grabbed my attention is Ed Clark whose work is basically about shape and color. Luckily, He is giving a lecture about his works process and concept behind on this Thursday, 24th of Oct, 2013.

Midterm Exam (Picture and Definations)

9. Manoj Babu Misra, Nepal.

Manoj Babu Misra, Nepal.

In this painting artist Manoj Babu Misra portrayed himself as a Mona Lisa’s husband. The artist always showed himself with some characteristic of animal and in this painting he put different ear and horn into his head. We can see Mona Lisa in Nepali makeup and all clothing and jewelry. Here, I want to clear that artist can give tangible form to his or her feelings and ideas or thought.

11. Maya Lin
Vietnam Veterans Memorial, 1980

Maya Lin designs the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1980 at the age of 21 years. She needs to show her sensitivity at that immature age to prove herself in front of some group because of controversy.

Civil Right Memorial, 1988/89
Women's Table, 1993 (Yale University)

After that she designs for Civil Right Memorial and Women’s Table at Yale University. She has originality and productivity and did many amazing works but her repetition of same theme of flowing water is not interesting. She used same technique in Women’s Table and Civil Right Memorial.

18. Garden of Poet, Van Gogh

The Poet's Garden, 1888

This is the one that I like most other than Van Gogh’s self-portrait. This is more playful and use of color is so amazingly beautiful. He use very thick strokes and straight green, yellow and white color in this canvas. This painting looks so full of life and it’s very cool which makes me fresh every time. I think he painted this painting in very happy mood.

19. Gerhard Richter

Gerhard Richter is an artist who does different kind of work and his abstract works are also well known. These are some of his work and we also have a chance to see his work at Art Institute of Chicago. There are four panel of this kind of his work. There is no figure or any kind of objects. The movement in these paintings is the most amazing factor of his work which is able to give sensational feeling to the viewers. It creates some kind of energy into our body. That is the importance or strong thing about abstract art. Even though we doesn’t see anything, there are something deep feelings, idea, or pulling factors in it.

28. Blog (Miao Wang)

I liked her choice of bronze sculpture Talking Skull, by Meta Warrick Fuller because it has so strong feelings and really deep meaning. One boy is placing his hand on the top of the place where the chest of the person supposed to be. It shows the poor boys sorrow and the loneliness without that person in his life.

Every single time I visited Art Institute, the first place I like to go and look at the paintings is the section of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism section. One of the section inside this is room with the paintings of Van Gogh, because I never get tired of his paintings. Furthermore, other impressionists works like Monet, Manet, Pissaro, Degas, Gauguin, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat and many more. I really enjoy all the collection of Monet's Hey Stack (Stack of Wheat), Water Lily Pond. These series of paintings was done in different season with same subject, where he was observing effects and role of light and color. You must stop and take a close look on these series of paintings.

Encounter with "SHIFT"

The most important thing in our world is a light or a source of light. Nothing comes to life if there has no existence of a light. Light is the main factor for seeing any object, or its color. I couldn't imagine life in black and white without any colors.
Work by Andy Goldsworthy, (Earth Art)

Newari Dress, Nepal.
I like colorful world and some of my best colors are Green, Red, Violet, Black and Blur. Green is my favorite color among all of them, because it gives me a feeling of peace and makes me calm and soft. I love the combination of Black and Red which looks really attractive. I think this is because of my culture. These both colors are used in our traditional Newari dress and also used in most of old temples.

My last week’s tour to the exhibition SHIFT by Luftwerk, a collaboration work of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, at Chicago Cultural Center is an excellent show of lights and color. They are trying to show relation between different color, and a relation with life and color. Therefore, they installed three different site-specific installations at the gallery space. I felt so glad to be there and experience with these colors. I think color creates reason to live in our life. The colors inspire us to do exciting things in our boring same routine life.

Luminous Field
Feb, 2012 by Luftwerk
at
Millennium Park, Chicago

Luftwerk’s first installation was 529 pieces of cube painted panel that is set on the wall and projected light interact with these colorful panel, and produce unlimited shades of color. They named that place “Spectrum”, which literarily means bands of color as seen through prism. I am totally agreed that Josef Albers says, “Our concern is the interaction of color; that is, seeing what happens between colors.” I felt similarly at the time of observing this work.

Second installation is named “Synthesis” combine work with six different colors light and a composed instrumental music was used. All the colors create a shadow in the middle of installation project room with exciting colors. While viewers walked by the space, they unknowingly create a beautiful art work for very short period of time.

Enjoy the video.

Third one is called “Threshold” with two mirror panel and the reflection of walking light creates the illusion for viewers. It kind of gives a feeling like there are some secrete path to go separate world. When I saw that I remember the work of Frank Stella, an American artist’s, black paintings. This was outstandingly bold and very impressive.

Looking at the brochure, I get to know the two artists who was collaborating their works form then years and doing many different experiments. I am also aware of upcoming events at Chicago Cultural Center, which is related to this exhibition, “SHIFT.” The dates are October 11 & 12, A Performance for one, by Body Cartography, October 24, Gallery Talk with curator Greg Luncheford and Luftwerk, and November 9, and Oscillation by Owen Clayton Condon.

Architectural Boat Tour

Chicago Architectural Boat Tour

View form East coast of the Chicago Rive, 2013

October 02, 2013, after being here in Chicago for two and half year I got a change to do Architecture Boat Tour with my friends from an art class alone with our best teacher Ms. Gitte.  She is awesome and I think all of my friends and especially I am very happy to have her as a teacher and thankful to her for arranging this great opportunity for us.

All of my friends except me and Gitte, 2013

Chicago is a birthplace of Skyscraper and I am living in this prestigious city of the United State. Chicago is a land of tallest building in North America till the today's date. There are five tallest building above 1000 ft of height and we started our tour just in front of Trump Tower, second tallest skyscraper in Chicago.

(Reinforced Concrete Method)
Merian City Tower
We are twenty students and a teacher with some other travelers. I am so excited to start my boat tour and generate my knowledge about Chicago’s skyscraper or basically about architecture in Chicago. I have opportunity to see and understand what we learn in our textbook about architecture and the little bit of method of construction. Most of the skyscraper that build in second half of the 20th century is based on steel-frame construction and also known as International style design, where it emphasized clean lines and geometric surface specially rectangular or square shape. These buildings and designs also fall in the post-modern architecture system. Some of the old building also made with the system called Balloon-Frame construction before Steel-Frame construction and some Cast-Iron construction. One of the famous building form  Chicago city was built by Reinforced Concrete method, which is known by Merina City Tower, stand by each other. Merina City Tower is also well known building that feature in many movies.

333 Wacker Drive, 2013
with reflection of buildings
Each and every single building have its own unique feature and characteristic showing in front of us. Even though, some of my favorite buildings are Aqua, 333 Wacker Drive, Chicago Board of Trade, and Tribune Tower. Aqua is so cool and give you a feeling of freshness of floating water from outside and every single layer is a balcony of the building. Another building 333 Wacker Drive is the building that you can appreciate when you are in boat tour. I like this building because of its round body and the reflection that we can see is just amazing. The Chicago Board of Trade building is best for me just because of its statue on the top of the building which stands 37 feet tall and the interesting thing is that it doesn’t’ have any face. The reason about not curving any face in the sculpture is unnecessary to do so. No one is going to see any details from the street level. Chicago Tribune Tower was able to won the title of wonderful building in the world in 1922 and main attraction of this building for me is fragments of more than 150 historical sites.  Every time I pass by this building, I need to stop and look at these fragments closely. I think it’s very artistic and entertaining both together. There are many other buildings that I appreciate and want to talk about.

Chicago is one of the very important cities for its architecture because it’s a birthplace of Skyscraper and many world famous buildings and also known as world’s first tallest building holder city. Chicago’s architecture showed new hope and excitement for builders and engineers and it’s always been inspiration for most of them. Chicago gave very first chance to build something new and different from other city after Chicago’s great fire. All this destruction gave new foundation to do or build new ideas. So, I think Chicago is very important from architectural perspective.

Thank you for your precious time......................
