Encounter with "SHIFT"

The most important thing in our world is a light or a source of light. Nothing comes to life if there has no existence of a light. Light is the main factor for seeing any object, or its color. I couldn't imagine life in black and white without any colors.
Work by Andy Goldsworthy, (Earth Art)

Newari Dress, Nepal.
I like colorful world and some of my best colors are Green, Red, Violet, Black and Blur. Green is my favorite color among all of them, because it gives me a feeling of peace and makes me calm and soft. I love the combination of Black and Red which looks really attractive. I think this is because of my culture. These both colors are used in our traditional Newari dress and also used in most of old temples.

My last week’s tour to the exhibition SHIFT by Luftwerk, a collaboration work of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, at Chicago Cultural Center is an excellent show of lights and color. They are trying to show relation between different color, and a relation with life and color. Therefore, they installed three different site-specific installations at the gallery space. I felt so glad to be there and experience with these colors. I think color creates reason to live in our life. The colors inspire us to do exciting things in our boring same routine life.

Luftwerk’s first installation was 529 pieces of cube painted panel that is set on the wall and projected light interact with these colorful panel, and produce unlimited shades of color. They named that place “Spectrum”, which literarily means bands of color as seen through prism. I am totally agreed that Josef Albers says, “Our concern is the interaction of color; that is, seeing what happens between colors.” I felt similarly at the time of observing this work.

Second installation is named “Synthesis” combine work with six different colors light and a composed instrumental music was used. All the colors create a shadow in the middle of installation project room with exciting colors. While viewers walked by the space, they unknowingly create a beautiful art work for very short period of time.

Enjoy the video.

Third one is called “Threshold” with two mirror panel and the reflection of walking light creates the illusion for viewers. It kind of gives a feeling like there are some secrete path to go separate world. When I saw that I remember the work of Frank Stella, an American artist’s, black paintings. This was outstandingly bold and very impressive.

Looking at the brochure, I get to know the two artists who was collaborating their works form then years and doing many different experiments. I am also aware of upcoming events at Chicago Cultural Center, which is related to this exhibition, “SHIFT.” The dates are October 11 & 12, A Performance for one, by Body Cartography, October 24, Gallery Talk with curator Greg Luncheford and Luftwerk, and November 9, and Oscillation by Owen Clayton Condon.
